Sam Noble Wants to Know â¦
⦠if he just helped me run away from my foster home.
He doesnât say it in those exact words, but itâs still what he means. I canât blame him for asking.
âGladys doesnât like me to talk about home stuff,â I tell him. âShe says itâs private.â
âI understand, Ash, but I do know things arenât always easy there and ⦠I just donât want to lose the opportunity for you to come over by breaking any rules, yâknow?â
âYou probably wouldnât believe me if I told you,â I say in a jumble of panicked words.
âTry me.â
I swallow hard.
âI think Jordan wants to hurt me.â
Gentry turns and looks at me over his shoulder. Samâs eyes bounce-reflect off the rearview mirror, then back to the road.
âCan you say a little more about that?â he asks.
âGladysâs son? Jordan. Him and his wife ⦠um, stay there sometimes, and he ⦠he fixes things for Gladys, and ⦠I mean ⦠he nailed my bedroom window shut. Thatâs what took me so long to get out.â
After a stretch of silence, Sam says, âOkay.â The word comes out long and thin, like heâs thinking about it. âWhy ⦠why would you have to go through theââ
âAnd earlier, Gladys told him he wasnât allowed to hurt me. Like she knew he would try and do something if she didnât tell him not to.â
I can see the back of Samâs head nodding slowly.
âAnything else?â he says.
It all sounds cringe now, even to myself. Like Iâm making it up. Or making it out to be more than what it is. Like Iâm being all dramatic about it.
âNo,â I say.
I lean my head against the window, watching as the boba tea place and the Starbucks and Big Alâs roll by.
âWell, I donât mind at all if you stay tonight,â Sam says around Fifth, as we pass the hospital. âAnd we have spare toothbrushes, in case you werenât able to bring anything with you, and ⦠Iâm sure you can borrow a change of clothes from Gentry if need be. But weâll have to tell your caseworker something. I really think youâre going to have to let her know whatâs going on at home.â
This time, the word home sticks in my throat like a dry cracker.
âAre you going to tell her?â I ask.
He doesnât answer right away. The high school whips in and out of view, then the old Civil Warâera mansion that we took a field trip to last year.
âIâm not sure,â he finally says as we pass Childrenâs Park.
I nod. Swallow tears.
âAsh?â he says. âDo they ⦠did they ⦠have they ever hurt you?â
I blink fast. Blink faster. Iâm not sure what he means by hurt. When Gladys complains about how expensive it is for things like food or clothes for me? When Jordan acts like everything bad that happens is my fault? When Gladys lets him call me things like baby-dyke ⦠and worse? You canât show someone what that kind of hurt looks like, because it lives inside you instead of on your skin.
